This Word List Is A Real Humdinger!

January 13, 2014

"We want to re-enrich our experience with English, it's a wonderful language. But also, these are words that are fun to say."

Jerry Herron, Dean of Wayne State's Irvin D. Reid Honors College.

Every year, Lake Superior State University asks people which words and phrases ought to be symbolically—if not actually--banished from the Queen’s English. “Selfie” topped this year’s list released on New Year’s Eve. Rather than ban words that are overused, a team of Word Warriors at Wayne State is trying to revive words that have fallen out of everyday use. Jerry Herron is the dean of the Irvin D. Reid Honors College at Wayne State, and a stout Word Warrior. He tells WDET's Pat Batcheller where some of this year's words come from and what they mean--such as "fug".
